11 July GK

1.    World Population Day 2014 Observed Today
i. World Population Day is being observed today, an annual event on 11 July to raise awareness of global population issues.
ii. Established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, it was inspired by the interest in Five Billion Day on 11 July 1987 – approximately the date when the world's population reached five billion. 
iii. This year, the theme is "Investing in Young People." 

GLOBAL POPULATION FACTS: 
- 
As of 1 January 2014, the world's population was estimated to be 7,137,661,030, and increases by 2.3 people every second. 
 - The total number of people who have ever lived has been estimated by the Population Bureau to be around 108 billion. 
- The world population is estimated to have reached one billion in 1804, with two, three and four billion in 1927, 1960 and 1974 respectively. 
-China, India, USA, Indonesia, Pakistan and Brazil account for half the world's people. 
-More than one in three people are Chinese or Indian. 

2.    Grand old lady of Bollywood Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102
i. Family and friends bid farewell to veteran actress Zohra Sehgal, who was cremated in New Delhi on Friday. 
ii. The last rites of the 102-year-old actress, who died yesterday, were performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium by her son Pawan in the presence of her daughter Kiran and grandchildren. 
iii. Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, theatre personality MK Raina and Prasar Bharti CEO Jawahar Sircar were among those who turned up to pay their last respect. 

iv. Sehgal had a great innings as an artiste, performer and actor that spanned more than seven decades. She started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935. She had appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films besides television series and plays. 
v. Often called the grand old lady of Bollywood, she last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007. She worked with some of the biggest stars of this era be it Amitabh Bachchan in "Cheeni Kum", Shah Rukh Khan in "Dil Se" or Salman in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam".

TYPES OF CHEQUES 

1. Order Cheque: A cheque which is payable to a particular person or his order is called an order cheque.

2. Bearer Cheque: A cheque which is payable to a person whosoever bears, is called bearer cheque.

3. Blank Cheque: A cheque on which the drawer puts his signature and leaves all other columns blank is called a blank cheque.

4. Stale Cheque: The cheque which is more than six months old is a stale cheque.

5. Multilated Cheque: If a cheque is torn into two or more pieces, it is termed as mutilated cheque.

1. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Monday nominated hockey wizard Dhyan Chand for the Bharat Ratna, India`s highest civilian honour, for his outstanding achievements in the field of sports.

2. India's Silicon Valley, Bangalore has been ranked among the world’s eight largest technology innovation clusters by MIT Technology Review. Innovation clusters are places with dense webs of interconnected technology companies, customers, and suppliers, says the magazine.

3. The Alipore Zoological Garden of Kolkata on 5 August 2013 launched Adoption of Zoo Animals Scheme with an aim to create awareness and love for the wildlife among general public. The scheme was inaugurated by the West Bengal State Forest Minister, Hiten Barman.

Computer Awareness Questions in Banking Exam

The earlier computers, which were massive in size, were based on vacuum tubes.

Early computing machines, like the ENIAC, were actually m...eant to assist the armed forces.

The printers in pre-1950s were punch cards.

An improvement on the ENIAC, which pioneered ‘stored program’, was made possible with the help of the mathe-matician John von Neumann.

Before the 1950s, computers were mostly owned by universities and research labs.

The B-programming language was developed by Ken Thompson.

Famous people, associated with the ENIAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC computers are Eckert & Mauchly.

The 1st commercially produced and sold computer (1951) was UNIVAC.

आफरीदी ने किया एक और कीर्तिमान अपने नाम


 शाहिद आफरीदी दोबारा पाक टीम में शामिल होने के मिले मौके को गंवाना नहीं चाहते इसीलिए वह ताबड़तोड़ एक के बाद एक रिकॉर्ड अपने नाम करते जा रहे हैं।

हरफनमौला क्रिकेटर आफरीदी को एक धाकड़ बल्‍लेबाज के रूप में जाना जाता है। वह गेंदबाजी में भी कमाल करने में माहिर हैं। इस साल दो बार उन्हें पाक टीम में शामिल नहीं किया गया तो उनकी टीम को करारी हार का सामना करना पड़ा।

दक्षिण अफ्रीका दौरा और इंग्लैंड में हुए चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी में टीम की असफलता को देखते हुए पा‌‌क टीम के चयनकर्ताओं ने आफरीदी को मौका देना का फैसला लिया तो उन्होंने इसका जमकर फायदा उठाया।

1. UN Declared 19 November as World Toilet Day
i. In a bid to make sanitation for all a global development priority, the United Nations General Assembly designated 19 November as World Toilet Day, urging changes in both behaviour and policy on issues ranging from enhancing water management to ending open-air defecation.
ii. Adopting a new resolution, the Assembly urged UN Member States and relevant stakeholders to encourage behavioural change and the implementation of policies to increase access to sanitation among the poor, along with a call to end the practice of open-air defecation, which it deemed “extremely harmful” to public health.
iii. Of the world’s 7 billion people, six billion have mobile phones. However, only 4.5 billion have access to toilets or latrines – meaning that 2.5 billion people, mostly in rural areas, do not have proper sanitation. In addition, 1.1 billion people still defecate in the open.
iv. World Toilet Day has previously been marked by international and civil society organizations all over the world. However, it was not formally recognized as an official UN day until today.

2.    Rampur first in N-India to get ATM facility in co-op banks
i. Rampur today become the first city of North India where ATM facility will be available for people maintaining accounts in co-operative banks. 
ii. UP Minister and local MLA Mohammad Azam Khan inaugurated five co-operative bank ATMs in the city today. 
iii. The minister said lakhs of account-holders in co-operative banks will now be able to withdraw money round-the-clock. 
iv. Mohammad Anjum Khan, Secretary-cum-CEO of the District Co-operative Bank, said Rampur has now become the first city of North India where co-operative bank account holders can also avail ATM facility.
